On February 24, 1998, the U.S. Department of Justice announced that it has brought five indictments against six men, one woman, and one company for smuggling ozone into the U.S. U.S. prosecutors in Arizona, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and the Virgin Islands brought the five cases. One case represents the first such prosecution involving halon, an ozone-depleting chemical used in fire extinguishers.
