In a case with far-reaching repercussions, on August 10, 1990, U.S. District Judge Edward Rafeedie ruled that the U.S. did not have jurisdiction over Dr. Humberto Alvarez Machain, a Guadalajara gynecologist, and must be returned to Mexico.
