Abstract:
After more than a year of concerted efforts by Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf and other international partners, the United Nations Security Council (“Security Council”) unanimously agreed to lift its ban on the export of diamonds from Liberia.  Although the decision to lift the ban will likely help Liberia’s lagging economy and may assist in providing much needed jobs to unemployed ex-combatants, some critics question whether the underlying causes of the sanctions have been fully addressed.
