On June 1, 2000, the International Tribunal For Crimes in Rwanda sentenced Georges Ruggiu, an Italian citizen who worked for private Radio Television Libre des Mille Collines in Rwandan and the only foreigner charged in the genocide, to 12 years in prison for his broadcasts that encouraged the 1994 genocide. On October 24, 1999, Ruggiu pleaded not guilty to inciting Hutus to kill Tutsis.
