Abstract:
Mexico has successfully extradited from the United States and then obtained the conviction of a Mexican national, Mr. Kamel Nacif Borge. The amount of the agreed penalty, the equivalent of approximately US$1 million, makes the case of unprecedented importance for the Mexican tax enforcement effort and in general for U.S.-Mexican criminal cooperation. The successful extradition of Mr. Nacif demonstrates the growing tendency of governments to extradite for fiscal crimes. The conviction, the use of the U.S. extradition treaty, and the ability to freeze and then obtain a large fine all constitute major victories for the Mexican and U.S. Governments?[more]
