Italy Requests Argentina to Extradite Ex-Nazi Priebke

On June 7, 1994, an Italian Justice Ministry official announced that Italy formally requested that Argentina extradite former Nazi German SS captain Erich Priebke, 81, to stand trial for war crimes. The Argentine Government has promised to do everything possible to extradite Priebke, once the Italian Government requests his extradition. Since May 9, 1994, Mr. Priebke has been under house arrest in the Argentine resort of San Carlos de Bariloche. Priebke has lived in Argentina since 1948 and is wanted by an Italian military prosecutor for his involvement in the execution of 335 Italians at the Ardeatine Caves outside Rome in 1944. In the ABC interview, Mr. Priebke acknowledged that he had participating in the killing and that he had personally slain two persons.
