Abstract:
On May 3, 2006, the European Union suspended talks on closer ties with Serbia, citing Serbia’s failure to arrest war crimes suspect General Ratko Mladic. Hours after the EU announcement, Miroljub Labus, a Serbian deputy prime minister and head of Serbia’s EU negotiating team, announced his resignation. He blamed Prime Minister Vojislav Kosunica for the failure to deliver Mladic. Mladic is accused of genocide, both in connection with the siege and bombardment of Sarajevo and the Srebrenica massacre, in which approximately 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed in 1995.
