On February 18, 2004, Guatemala?s highest court removed immunity from Alfonso Portillo, the president of Guatemala until January 2004, as investigation for corruption continues. In particular, Guatemala is investigating the disappearance of federal funds into Panamanian bank accounts. Meanwhile, Mexican officials said Mr. Portillo recently entered Mexico on a tourist visa. Mr. Portillo left the country shortly before federal prosecutors investigating corruption allegations said they would try to obtain an order to prevent his departure.
