Abstract: 
On October 23, 2007, the European Commission (EC) said it will ask for a mandate from its members to negotiate a new Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) with major trading partners, including the U.S., Japan, Korea, Mexico, and New Zealand. The purpose of the agreement is to strengthen efforts to protect European and international intellectual property worldwide, an important element of international trade strategy.
