Abstract:
On July 22, 2003, the European Council issued a framework decision on combating corruption in the private sector, after having adopted a Convention in 1997 combating corruption among EU officials. The decision defines what should be considered an offense in the private sector, essentially giving or taking bribes, and continues by outlining appropriate punishments for these offenses which include restrictions on activity in both the public and private sectors. The Framework Decision requires that EU member countries adopt measures to comply with it by July 22, 2005. The Decision is wide in scope and reflects the continuing influence of economic integration organizations.
