Abstract: 
2004 was a year in which anti-corruption efforts continued to have a dynamic impact on current or former heads of state in Central American countries. Costa Rica, traditionally known for its high governance and integrity marks, has especially been a focus of activity. In November 2004, Rafael Angel Calderon, president of Costa Rica from 1990 to 1994, was sentenced to a nine-month prison term while the investigations of corruption charges against him continue.
