Abstract:
On January 15, 1994, Belarus extradited Mykolas Burokevicius and Juozas Jarmalavicius, leaders of the underground Lithuanian Communist Party, to Lithuania. Lithuanian and Belarussian officials arrested the men in Minsk and took them to a Vilnius prison. The arrest and extradition of the two communist leaders has caused a political storm in Belarus. The Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Lithuania signed a treaty on legal aid and legal relations in civil, family, and criminal cases in October 1992. The Supreme Soviet of the Republic of Belarus ratified the treaty in February 1993. Presumably the Belarussians based their assistance to Lithuanian law enforcement officers on this treaty?[more]
