On March 2, 2000, General Augusto Pinochet returned to Chile after 17 months of house arrest on a Spanish extradition request amid uncertainty of his status in Chile and leaving perhaps the most important judicial precedent in the modern era. On March 2, 2000, Jack Straw, the British Interior Minister, ended the case by declaring that the 84-year-old general was not fit to face trial after suffering brain damage caused by strokes the preceding autumn.
