Abstract:
On June 3, 1994, 53 Mexican citizens imprisoned in the U.S. for committing crimes in the United States were transferred to Mexican prisons. Attorney General Janet Reno explained that the transfer program saves U.S. taxpayers millions of dollars each year. The transfer program is available to state correction systems, as well, and the Justice Department is planning to regularize further transfers.
