International Certification to Combat Diamond Smuggling Gains Momentum and U.N. Security Council Bans Sales of Diamonds from Sierra Leone

On June 28, 2000, government and industrial officials from Belgium, India, Israel and the U.S. attended a meeting organized by the British Government at which they agreed to cooperate with other interested persons to explore the feasibility of a global certification mechanism for rough diamonds.
