On March 30, 2012 Vito Roberto Palazzola was arrested by the Royal Thai police at the Bangkok airport, after a collaborative effort between INTERPOL’s Fugitive Investigative Support unit and the Foreign Affairs and Tourist Police divisions of the Royal Thai Police. In 2009, Palazzola was sentenced to nine years of imprisonment by an Italian court for his involvement with the Cosa Nostra Sicilian mafia. As a member of this mafia, Palazzola laundered money made through drug trafficking as well as cigarette smuggling. Palazzola’s arrest occurred after he became the subject of an INTERPOL Red Notice, which circulates identification information for wanted fugitives amongst INTERPOL’s 190 member countries.
