In the last couple months tensions have risen between the United States and Egypt over the large number of unregistered non-governmental organizations in Egypt. According to Egyptian law, it is required that all NGOs register with the Egyptian government; however, the US recently allocated nearly $150 billion to several unregistered NGOs in Egypt. Egypt’s requirement that all NGOs register with the government violates international law because it allows the government the authoritarian power to exclude certain NGOs. It also grants them economic authority over these NGOs because it allows the Egyptian government to withhold funding from the organizations they disfavor.
