On August 11, 1992, the United States Senate ratified the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal. The Convention has the purpose of prohibiting the shipment of hazardous waste to countries lacking appropriate facilities for such material.
