On June 17, 1993, U.S. Customs Service Commissioner George Weise in testimony before the House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee requested that Congress amend § 6103 of the Internal Revenue Code to allow the Customs Service, in the conduct of a specific national audit, to request and obtain tax information so that it can corroborate information Customs has already received from importers.
