During August and September 1999, Swiss, French, English, Austrian, and German authorities announced investigations concerning alleged bribe payments and money laundering involving high-level officials in Russia. In the wake of similar investigations in the U.S. concerning payments through the Bank of New York, the Swiss and French investigations have received much attention.
