Abstract:
Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo rebuked former Liberian president Charles G. Taylor on September 16, 2003, and threatened to revoke his asylum if he did not cease interfering with internal Liberian affairs. UN reports indicated that Taylor was staying in close contact with his political and military leaders, expressly forbidden in the conditions of asylum which disallowed Liberian visitors or travel. Taylor?s actions may affect future asylum considerations for African political leaders. Meanwhile, civil conflict in Liberia has hurt its position as a port, and members of the international community are calling for greater transparency. The Movement for Democracy in Liberia took over maritime affairs in October 2003, which will hopefully provide greater transparency.
